There’s a ton of good fintech and financial services writing out there, and today I’m going to talk about some of the writers that I learn a lot from, and highlight some of their insightful analyses.
Byrne Hobart at the Diff: The Diff is one of my favorite finance and tech newsletters in general, and Hobart writes a lot about fintech. Some of his best fintech writing is his profiling of Stripe, and he’s also written well about crypto, including a great teardown of Coinbase. As a bonus, he also often has great career advice.
Matt Levine: It’s hard to argue there’s a more insightful or entertaining writer about financial services than Matt Levine. He covers everything from SPACs to ESG investing to the business of investment banking, and does so in a frequently hilarious manner. His writing on the concept of shareholder value is especially insightful, and often challenges my own intuitions about how the corporate world should work.
Vitalik Buterin: Buterin, the founder of Ethereum, writes well about a broad range of topics, but focuses on crypto and cryptoeconomics. I’m still trying to fully understand all the topics he covers, but his writing is always worth reading. He recently wrote about the limits of cryptoeconomics, and in doing so, discusses why blockchain technology might be applicable beyond the financial space.
Bits about Money: This is a newer newsletter about financial services innovation and fintech, and it comes from Patrick McKenzie, who has a must-read Twitter feed.
